Election of a new Grand Master of The Swedish Order of Freemasons, The Grand Lodge of Sweden

Professor MW Bro. Anders Fahlman has been elected Grand Maser of The Swedish Order of Freemasons, The Grand Lodge of Sweden to replace the MW Bro. Gustaf Piehl, who retires this year.

The office of Grand Master has a long history in The Grand Lodge of Sweden. For over 200 years it has been discharged by Swedish Kings and members of the Royal Family. The present Grand Master MW Bro. Gustaf Piehl succeeded Bro. Prince Bertil, who died in January, 1997.

The new Grand Master is a professor of physics at the University of Linkörping and has for many years been the prefect of the Dept. of Physics and Measurement Technology. His research-work includes studies related to chemical relations of electrons and he has been a guest research worker in the US. In his scientific career he has also been collaborating with the Nobel Laureate Professor Kai Siegbahn at Uppsala.

The Constitution of The Swedish Order of Freemasons, The Grand Lodge of Sweden has become public

From the lates turn of the year the Constitution of the Swedish Order of Freemasons, The Grand Lodge of Sweden has been readily available to the public at large.

This decision by the Order has resulted in the publication of a book which is readily available to the interested public. The text is, however, obtainable only in Swedish.

The publication incorporates besides the organisation and structure, the prerequisites for membership, and the basic concepts of the Order, also the duties of a Freemason. "By publishing its rules and regulations the Order aims at informing the public of its organisational structure and to explicitly manifest its message", emphasises the retiring Grand Master Bro. Gustaf Piehl.

"The Rituals themselves will, however, continue to remain strictly secret. The very proceedings that take place at a Lodge meeting have always to be kept confidential. The passing through the Masonic degree structure is intended to reveal empirical knowledge. Should the substance contained in these rituals be published the pedagogic model, and the singular experience of each candidate would then be lost. It would be as to an advance unveiling of a written test", he adds.

The Duke of Kent has paid a visit to The Swedish Order of Freemasons, The Grand Lodge of Sweden

HRH the Duke of Kent, Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, arrived in Stockholm on 6 November, 2000 to be awarded the Royal Order of King Charles (Carl) XIII by HM King Carl XVI Gustaf, the High Protector of The Swedish Order of Freemasons, The Grand Lodge of Sweden, and to visit the Bååt Palace, the home of the Swedish Order of Freemasons, there to attend the ongoing Lodge workings.

There are several reasons for the Duke's visit. That we are a very active Order in today's Europe, that can demonstrate a stimulating and active communion was most certainly of great importance.

The Duke was bidden most welcome to our Grand Lodge Temple, that can present a newly renovated facade and a historically unique interior.
The Duke brought with him the English GM's ceremonial sword. This was the first time the sword had been taken out of England since 1730 when had been presented to the Grand Lodge by the then Duke of Norfolk. The story is told that the sword was found on the 6th of November, 1632 at the battle field at Lützen lying close to the dead body of HM King Gustavus II Adolphus of Sweden.

The sword was much admired by His Swedish Majesty at the reception in the Royal Palace and thereafter transported to the Bååth Palace and that same evening exposed to all the Brethren attending the lodge meetings in the building. Needless to say that the Duke of Kent took it with him at his departure for England.
